In short. A stage plot is not a pretty render. It is a working document. Most plots that land in my inbox are good-looking and useless: no scale, no signal positions, no dimensions, no legend. A stage plot is judged on one thing: can the crew load the stage without calling the person who drew it. Before you draw a single line, you settle four things: the scale, the orientation, the level of detail, and who the document is for. Only then do you place the elements. This guide explains what a stage plot must contain, how to draw one step by step, and the three cases where a full version is wasted time.
Most stage plots forwarded to me are gorgeous. Clean 3D render, colours, perspective. And not a single dimension. No scale. Nobody knows where the audio inputs land. A plot like that, you do not load from it. You look at it.
A stage plot does one job: let a crew build the stage without calling whoever drew the document. It is a technical deliverable, not a presentation image. Whether you draw it by hand, in an online tool, or in CAD software, the test does not change. Can the stage manager, the rigger and the video vendor work from it, on their own.
A Stage Plot Is a Deliverable, Not a Drawing
What a Stage Plot Actually Is
A stage plot is the stage layout, seen from above, to scale. It shows where the performers go, the set, the lighting fixtures, the projection surfaces, and where the audience sits. It says where the signal inputs and the power feeds are.
That is it. Not a mood, not an intention. A map the crew follows on build day.
Stage Plot, Stage Design, Scenography: Where the Plot Sits

The design answers the question "what effect should the show produce". The plot answers "where does the gear go". Two questions, two documents.
Who Reads a Stage Plot, and Why Each Person Looks for Something Else
Several people open the plot on show day, and none of them read it the same way.
- The stage manager checks positions and the flow on the deck.
- The rigger looks for hang points and loads.
- The audio engineer looks at inputs and monitor placement.
- The video vendor checks projection surfaces and throw distances.
- The venue verifies it all fits and respects its constraints.

What a Stage Plot Must Contain
Scale and Orientation: the Two Things Missing Most Often
A plot without a scale is not a plot. It is a mood sketch. With no scale, nobody can tell whether the drum riser fits the space planned for it, or whether the set clears the truck door.
Orientation is the second classic miss. Which side is the audience on. An arrow, a word, anything. Without it, the rigger does not know if stage left is on the left or the right, and finds out during the build.
Positions: Performers, Set, Fixtures, Projection Surfaces
Every physical element has a place on the plot. The performers. The set and its risers. The lighting fixtures. The projection surfaces.
A projection surface on a plot is not a box. It carries a throw distance. Indoors, the common throw ratio runs between 0.8 and 1.5, which means a projector needs room behind it. If the plot draws the screen without reserving the throw corridor, the video vendor finds out on site.
Signal and Power: Where the Inputs Land
The plot has to show where the signal lands. Audio inputs, the input list, power lines, hang points.
That is the part the pretty renders always skip. A superb set, and no indication of where the power comes from. To lay out the video surfaces cleanly on the plot, a multi-projector calculator helps set the distances before you freeze the document.
Notes and Legend: a Plot You Cannot Decode Is Decor
A legend explains the symbols. Without it, every pictogram is a guess. A plot with no legend is a treasure map without the treasure.
The notes fill in the rest: trim heights, venue constraints, build order. Two lines of text save ten questions on the loading dock.
How to Draw a Stage Plot, Step by Step
The process is always the same. Seven steps, in order.
- Survey the venue. Real measurements, in metres. Not "roughly".
- Pick the scale. A scale that fits the print format you plan to use.
- Place the fixed elements. Walls, bars, hang points, access.
- Add the gear. Set, fixtures, projection surfaces, with their real footprint.
- Add the signal markings. Audio inputs, power lines, dimensioned hang points.
- Lay down the legend. Every symbol used, explained.
- Cross-check against the input list. The plot and the input list have to say the same thing.
Step 7 is the one everyone skips. It is also the one that catches half the errors. A plot that says 16 inputs and an input list that counts 20 means four cables missing on stage.
Stage Plot Tools: What to Use, and What They Will Not Do
Free Software, CAD, or a Clean Sketch
An online stage plot generator, like StagePlot, is fast for a band plot. CAD is better when the venue demands precise dimensions. And a clean hand sketch beats an unreadable CAD file, every time.
The tool does not make the plot. A plot is judged on its readability, not on the software that produced it. A free generator that puts out a clear document beats an overloaded CAD file nobody opens.

For a band show, the plot revolves around audio. Inputs, monitors, backline, musician positions. The video, if there is any, stays secondary. A band plot can be simple, as long as it is readable.
The Event and Corporate Stage Plot: Video Takes More Room Than People Think
On a brand event, video often eats more space than the client imagines. An LED wall, a projection surface, their throw distances and their rigging. On a project like the Estée Lauder event documented by Modulo Pi, the video package structures the plot as much as the set.
A corporate plot that treats video as a detail gets caught out during the build.
The Permanent Venue's Plot: Drawn Once, Lived With for Years
A permanent venue draws its plot once, and the crew lives with it for years. The point is not beauty, it is durability. A permanent plot has to stay accurate after three crew changes.
When a Full Stage Plot Is Not Worth It
A dimensioned, legended plot is not always justified. Three cases where it is overkill.
On a small stage, a solo act, two audio inputs. A legended sketch on half a page does the job. Putting out a dimensioned CAD file for that is wasted time for everyone, including the person drawing it.
When the venue already provides an accurate, reliable layout. You annotate it, you do not redraw it. Redrawing a correct plot is not rigour, it is overkill.
When nobody on the crew will read the plot on show day. A document nobody opens has no value. An hour of clear briefing beats a gorgeous plot the rigger never saw.
Documenting an install is non-negotiable. Signal diagram, positions, contacts. If you go on holiday, the stand-in has to be able to pick it up. The stage plot is exactly that handover document. A readable plot lets anyone load the stage. A vague plot creates a dependency on its author, and every missing detail is paid back in minutes of questions on the dock.
