Multi-projector calculator for video mapping

Sizing tool for multi-projector setups. It computes in real time the number of projectors required to cover a given surface at a target pixel size, while respecting overlap constraints (5 to 95%). Designed for mapping technical directors, scenographers and AV integrators who need to validate feasibility in minutes rather than spend hours in a spreadsheet. The result shows the projector grid (width × height), the total canvas in pixels, the effective pixel size, the actual overlap and a visual preview that exports to PNG, JPEG, PDF or CSV.

Real-world use cases

  • Tender response: size a 30 m × 12 m façade mapping with a 5 mm target pixel, and get a fully costed PDF to attach to the technical brief.
  • Pre-site survey: confirm a 20 m × 8 m floor projection can run on 6 WUXGA projectors in portrait, without firing up the 3D simulator.
  • Client briefing: export the layout visual and the projector distribution table before the first technical meeting.
  • Compare two scenarios (4K vs WUXGA) in a few clicks to defend a budget decision in front of the client.
  • Hardware order prep: generate a CSV listing each projector with its canvas zone and overlap, ready to hand to the technical manager.

Frequently asked questions

Which formula drives the projector count calculation?
The engine starts from the target pixel size and the projector's native resolution, derives the usable surface per projector, then iterates over width × height combinations until it finds the smallest grid that covers the surface while staying inside the overlap bounds.
What overlap range works for a clean edge blend?
On a fixed façade, 10 to 20% is a comfortable zone. On tour or on floor projections that get walked on, aim for 20 to 30% to absorb mechanical drift. The tool accepts any value between 5 and 95%.
Does the tool account for lens choice and throw ratio?
No. This calculator sizes the pixel grid. To check optical feasibility (distance, lens shift, lumens), use the dedicated projector calculator on the same Tools page.
Can I export results to my usual workflow?
Yes. High-resolution PNG or JPEG for client visuals, recap PDF for proposals, CSV for Excel or hardware tracking.
Does my data stay private?
Everything runs in the browser. No file, no dimension is sent to a server. The tool works offline once loaded.
