A real case: a video projection calculation tool

Context

On every project, I spent hours on the same calculations: throw ratio, projected pixel size, lumens to lux conversion, projector count to cover a surface. Excel and manufacturer spec sheets, to redo every time.

The challenge

No tool on the market covered that precise need: cross-referencing a real projector database, reliable photometric calculations, and a clean export for technical dossiers. The existing online calculators were either imprecise or limited to a single use case.

My approach

I developed my own tools, first for my own use. A video projection calculator, a multi-projector calculator, a test pattern generator. Then Lumeo, a full 3D simulator, because the need went well beyond raw calculation.

Result

What was my personal tool became a product used by engineering offices and contractors. The proof that a tool thought up by a practitioner for a real need ends up serving the whole trade.

What languages do you develop in?

Python and JavaScript mainly, for scripts, plugins and web platforms. Python and JavaScript development inside Modulo for interactivity. And Blender plugins when the 3D workflow calls for it.

How much does a custom tool cost?

It depends entirely on the scope. A simple automation script has nothing to do with a web platform for project tracking. The brief is there precisely to scope that before committing.

What if my need changes after delivery?

The tools I deliver are built to evolve. The code is documented, you are in control of it. I can take over for the upgrades, or your team can handle it.

What exactly do you do, and what not?

I code business tools tied to video projection and mapping: automation, calculation, interactivity, project management. I do not do general-purpose application development unrelated to the field.
